I need waterproof. Baseball caps aren’t doing the trick in the rain and I also don’t want the back of my neck getting burned in the sun. I’m thinking cowboy hat, but what material? Felt? Wool? Also, does anyone know the best clothing material for rain? I wear jeans and a shirt and jacket on sunny days, but I need something waterproof, but sturdy. Im slopping pigs, caring for cattle, riding a 4-wheeler around and riding horses alot. I already split a pair of flimsy rain pants. FYI, Im a woman but have no issue wearing mens stuff! New to the ranch thing! Im loving it but im freezing in the rain!
When riding horses I never left home without my raincoat. A long outback, oilskin duster. My hat is an outback type as well. Felt material that is waterproof. It makes the rain go straight off to your back. I could roll this hat with my coat and tie to my saddle, the shape never much mattered in the rain, and it reshapes if you set it just right as it is drying. The coat has all the right splits and snaps and adjustments for straddling a horse and extends over your legs to keep them dry. I buy the same boots year after year as well. Ariats are what my feet love. Pull on ropers with work sole. Walking across rivers never phases these boots, as matter of fact its the best way to break them in. With hard core daily use they last me a year before they start letting moisture in. Cleaning instructions on that coat is to spray with garden hose and hang to dry. Never needs laundered. You have to wear jeans on a horse, so if the does not help enough you may want to look into some oilskin chaps. I sold mine. They were filson tin chaps. Were great to have when I needed them. They were two pieces, could slide over boot and snapped on to belt. I found these on line going directly through Filson. I have since moved on from my life with horses and sold my small coat, but still have one in size lg. that I will eventually put on ebay to sell. I have my hat too. If you are interested let me know.

I’m buying a bike to ride mostley in London- what do people recomend I wear?
I’m getting a CBR600 (my first bike!) and will be mostley riding to and from work (although I will be taking it out of the city and would like to do some track days where I will obviousley wear boots and full leathers…). I was going to get a leather jacket – maybe Dainese (?) – and gloves (not sure what I should be looking for really hough!) but would people recomend boots and some sort of trousers as well for the city streets? If so what sort? I can only see racing boots when I look online- is this what I should be looking for? Help..!
Always buy the best gear you can afford.
You have to wear a fastened helmet by law. Again buy the best you can. As I say to my pupils – “You only get one head”
Helmets made from Kevlar are the best material to go for but is also the most expensive. Carbon and Glass Fibre are also good materials to look for when buying any helmet. Good brands are: Shoei, Arai, AGV.
Remember that although all helmets are usually sized the same (Extra Small – XXL) it doesn’t mean that you will be the same size in every make of helmet. Always try the helmet on. You don’t want pressure along your forehead and skull but it should press against your cheeks so you look a little like a hamster.
As for gear. Get the best you can.Leather is a brilliant material to use as it offers a good deal of protection and can keep you cool in hot weather. A disadvantage of leather is that it is not waterproof and if it gets wet it can take a while to dry out and it smells. Don’t get Frank Thomas gear – its s**t! Alpine stars, Dainese, Buffalo are good makes for clothing. Make sure that the clothing you choose, has sufficient protection from the weather and padding in case you was to come off and also make sure it is ‘CE’ marked. Its the same for gloves
As for boots, Leather boots would be the best. You can also buy rubber and plastic boots as well which are ok but not the best. I have a cheap pair of Nitro ankle boots and they are brilliant for my job as they don’t get too hot and keep my feet warm in the cold weather and keep them dry. Ive had them now for about 2 years and not had a problem with them – only paid about £15 for them as well.
It doesn’t matter what make or style you buy, as long as you feel comfortable wearing them and it gives you all the protection you need – thats all that matters, no one can criticize you for buying a particular boot, helmet or clothing! Its your personal preference. Alot of my pupils will ask me whats the best they can buy and I will tell them “there is no such thing as the best, everyone has their own taste in style, colour, make, price. Its all down to how you feel wearing it”

I just bought a Levi denim jacket online and recieved it today. I ordered a large thinking it should fit, because most jackets I wear are large. But not this one, the sleeves went past my hand and all you could see is my finger tips hanging out. The jacket went several inches past my waist. I was hoping it would just barely cover my belt if I wear one, and my hands were actually accessible. If I send it back should I get a medium or do you think it will still be too big or get a small? I’m afraid the medium might be a little too big also but the small will be too small. What should I do, I paid 12 bucks shipping already so might as well bite the bullet and re order a new size.

I dont think it can be done on site. the clue is in the name “powder coat” the item to be coated is cleaned then coated in polymer powder then baked in an oven to melt the powder into a film of plastic bonded to the item
