Bomber jackets were used heavily since the Second World War for pilots who needed the warmth in high altitudes. Prior to that, in the First World War, pilots riding in open air cockpits had to make do with whatever they cold afford. It wasn’t until around 1917 that the US military created the Aviation Clothing Board. Soon after, they began issuing their pilots the A2 bomber jacket.
Other early bomber coats were the M-445 which was later replaced by the M-444 and the G-1 flight jacket. The first ones were made of leather with high collars that wrapped around the neck, the zippered closures had broad wind flaps, and the cuffs and waist were snug.
Several different varieties of the bomber jackets were issued and by the 1930’s they were making them out of seal skin and horse hide. But as the enlistments grew and the military gained in popularity, the seal skin was not feasible for the masses. The US military then began to use horse hide exclusively as it was very plentiful in the US markets.
When World War Two came, the manufacturing of these jackets was well entrenched and new varieties of bomber coats were developed. Shearling (sheepskin) began to be used to make the new B-3 Shearling flight jacket as well as developing many other articles and accessories such as boots and gloves.
Heated flight jackets began to be used which were very thin and light and were worn under the bomber coat along with many more accessories and gear such as the parachute harness. The Shearling jacket, however, never lost popularity and, in fact, became such a hit with the pilots that the manufacturers had trouble keeping up with demand. Shearling is soft wool which has never been separated from the tanned skin. The shearling jackets kept the pilots cool in even the most extreme conditions. Eventually, a new type of shearling bomber coat was developed, the ANJ-4, which had a layer goat of skin to assist in protection from wear and for added strength.
Soon, another new type was developed which grew in heavy demand. These new bomber coats were made of wool and nylon blends, such as the B-15 flight jacket, which were every bit as warm but much lighter than the prior leather jackets. Eventually, however, the newly heated suits which buy now had a plug in for every part of the suit largely took the place of the bomber coats.
A good bomber jacket is one of the best investments you will ever make. If you buy a quality one, it will last you for many years. Take good care of it and it will be one that you can pass down to your kids and theirs after that.
Today’s bomber coats come in many different styles, colors and features. You can get authentic replicas of almost all of the original jackets. FlightJacket.com has some extremely high quality bomber jackets and many of the other flight jackets that were worn during wars. They can do custom imprinting on your jacket, embossed leather work, and patches. They are a top notch quality company.

The Golden Bear Cafe Bomber is my pick of the bunch there. Very good style at the moment and it’s that time of the year when we could do with a warm coat.:D
Great site! That Cole Haan Wool Bomber jacket is awesome. I love Cole Haan products because they have really good style and quality, and they last a long time. I bought a leather belt from Cole Haan in Manhattan more than 20 years ago, & I still wear it everyday. It’s in great shape.

Oh my goodness…I never made the connection between bomber jackets and bomber planes. It was always “Stop worrying Mum I’ll be warm enough I’ve got my bomber jacket”. You live and learn. My personal favourite is the leather bomber jacket as I love their ability to repel rain and keep you as snug as a bug! The Burnside Bomber Jacket looks to be a fantastic jacket…it looks rugged and warm at the same time.
