Design a Coat Closet that Works

A coat closet can become a storage space or your organizational paradise.  You may not feel like you have much to work with, because most coat closets are very small.  But, you can use these tips to make the most use out of absolutely every inch of that coat closet and get your house in order.

The coat closet is really used for more than just coats.  Most families need to store backpacks, their laptops, sports equipment and more in this tiny space, just to keep it from piling up in the living room.  The more people you have in the house, the more important it is to organize this space.  You can create an easy-to-use system that works for your family.

Everyone has individual needs and habits.  The goal here is to work with those habits so that using an organization system in your coat closet comes easy.  If someone in your house comes in and kicks off their shoes by the front door every day, then put a bench or cedar box that closes there.  The shoes will have a place to go, no more than a couple of feet away from where this person is going to take them off, anyway.

This is the idea that you want to have in your head when you start debating how to organize this little closet.  If no one takes off their shoes there, then make another place for shoes by the door.  That just frees up more space in the coat closet.  You can put bins, boxes, baskets or shelves down there for each family member.  They can put their laptop, book bag, sports bag, or other belongings on their own shelf.

It is also a good idea to put hooks, if possible, on the inside walls of the closet.  Here you can hang tote bags, purses, scarves and more.  If you have about six inches of horizontal space on a wall, you can hang a small basket for each family member down the wall.  Hang each one at a descending height congruent with their age, or whatever determining factor you come up with.  You can label each basket with their names.  They can throw their keys, wallets, phones and change in their own basket, reducing house clutter and time spent searching for things when it’s time to leave the house.

Another great way to organize the closet is to utilize the door space.  There are a lot of over-the-door organizers that are perfect for holding things like gloves, hats and scarves in the winter.  You may look at pantry door organizers to find one that would most benefit your family.  For example, let’s say you get a pantry organizer that has different sized movable baskets.  You can have deep baskets for hats, medium ones for scarves, and shallow ones for gloves.  You can hang multiple baskets for each family member so that no one has to dig when looking for their other mitten.

Store coats that you don’t use a lot in other closets.  Try to keep the coat closet reserved for your everyday items.  Use sturdy hangers to hang coats so that they do not break and result in your coats on the floor.  Many clothes hangers work great, but a wood hanger or specially designed coat hanger works best.

Catch and Release Fishing

Fishing is a sport, but it has become less about survival and more about fun in recent decades. There is an issue of fish becoming depleted and many anglers are now employing the practice of catch and release fishing. Catch and release fishing is a great theory, but many people are doing it incorrectly and as a result many fish are dying. A few steps should be followed when trying to catch and release a fish. Once you get the hang of how to do it correctly, you will be able to enjoy your hobby and keep the population of fish full in your favorite stream or lake.

The best place to start is with the hooks. A fish that has a hole through its mouth is going to be more likely to survive than a fish with a hole in its lung or gill. If you happen to hook a fish in the gut, the best thing to do is to cut off the hook as much as you can then release the fish. Many times the hook will dissolve and the fish will spit it out, but they can also live with a rusted hook hanging from them. Whatever you do, do not tug on your line to pull a hook out or you will severely hurt the fish. If you are able to easily remove the hook, use a pair of needle nose pliers. The process of pulling the hook out is easier if you remove the barbs from the hooks, but try not to wiggle while you pull the hook out.

Fish are obviously unable to survive outside of the water. Therefore, the longer that it takes you to release them, the more it becomes as if you are suffocating them. The way that a fish is gripped when out of the water will make a big difference. For instance, avoid touch a fish’s body with your bare hands. The fish have a slimy protective coat that will be stripped if you touch them with your hands. If you have to touch a fish, make sure that your hands are wet. You may want to wear gloves to protect your hands from cuts or permeating fish smells.

Part of the fun in fishing is to “play out” the fish. The struggle can be what some anglers wait all day to do. Fish are like humans; when they “work out,” they build up lactic acid. When you are fighting a fish, they are fighting too. Just like when someone works his or her body out and it feels sore, a fish experiences the same thing. The build up of lactic acid can be toxic to a fish even days later. Therefore, if you are going to practice catch and release, try to keep the struggle to a minimum.

Try not to let a fish flop around when you catch them. A fish that flops around can bruise or damage its internal organs, causing them to die later from the injuries that are incurred. You can also revive a fish if you need to do so. A fish is likely to run out of oxygen and pass out, so to speak. In order to revive a fish, you place the fish in the water with their belly down and gently grasp their tail. Start to slowly move their tail back and forth until they give you the signal that they are ready to take off into the water. Sometimes you will need to repeat the process more than once, but don’t let a fish go until they are ready. A fish that is not ready to swim could get carried away and swept into rocks or embankment and cause serious injury.

More than anything, when you are practicing catch and release, have everything ready to go. Make sure that your camera, pliers, and gloves are in reaching distance. Try to take the precautions necessary to preserve fish and one of America’s favorite pastimes.

This is the military’s winter weight flight jacket. It is manufactured to Milspec MIL-J-83388 on the current military production line. The CWU-45/P is made entirely from NOMEX® fiber, including the continuous filament twill shell, warm quilted lining, zipper, and knit waistband cuffs. Its storm flap and knit cuffs and waistband keep out the cold. Two front pockets that close with hook-and-loop fastener and a zippered pen-and-pencil pocket on the left sleeve give you room to stow your gear.

CWU-36/P Summer Jacket:
The CWU-36/P is a summer weight military flight jacket manufactured to military specification MIL-J-83382C. It is made completely from NOMEX®. The CWU-36/P is identical to CWU-45/P except that is has a lightweight summer lining and no storm flap.
