I think you are referring to “Pilling”. This is where loose fibres in a fabric form small balls on the surface of the fabric as it is rubbed. Certain fabrics are more prone to this than others.

Anybody with experience with coat rakes and where the best place to order might be?
I own Mars & the Oster one. The Mars is the better one & easier to get/buy replacement blades where with the cheaper versions you often cannot. If you are only using it to groom 1 dog, then Oster is probably good enough for you. However if it is a tool you will be using on a regular basis or multiple dogs, then I would spend the extra $10.
